Marquette (9-5, 5-1 BIG EAST) ran into a buzzsaw in Gainesville, Florida, surrendering 11 of the first 12 goals in an 18-6 rout against the No. 9 Florida Gators (11-3, 6-0 BIG EAST).

Florida especially out-muscled Marquette in the draw circle. The Gators commanded an 18-8 advantage in draw controls, largely thanks to the effort of freshman defender Sabrina Cristodero, who snagged eight draw controls.

Those early draw controls led to a veritable deluge of Florida goals. After Marquette senior attacker Riley Hill scored a goal at the 27:27 mark of the first half to level the score at 1-1, Florida scored seven goals in the next seven minutes and three seconds.

The Gators’ scoring was balanced Saturday afternoon. Ten players found the back of Marquette’s net. Gators midfielders Shannon Kavanagh and Sydney Pirreca notched four goals apiece, while Tewaaraton Award candidate Shayna Pirreca scored three goals.

Junior Grace Gabriel’s absence didn’t help Marquette’s cause. The Golden Eagles’ leading goal-scorer was disqualified after picking up her second yellow card at the 8:09 mark of the first half. It was the first game of the season in which Gabriel did not score a goal. She is still four goals behind Julianna Shearer for the program record in goals.

Senior attacker Riley Hill scored two goals for Marquette, while midfielders Megan Menzuber, Lindsey Willcocks, Allison Lane and Caroline Peterson each potted one goal.

Marquette has now lost all four matchups in the program’s history against Florida by an average of 11.75 goals per game. The Golden Eagles return home for their next game Wednesday against the Denver Pioneers.
