Tastefully Native

Who says you can only wear Native-inspired prints in the summer? Ancient patterns are timeless. Spicing up your look with a splash of color and Aztec-inspired prints can be a lot of fun if you’re feeling adventurous. Native fashion prints can be found on everything from dresses to scarves to bracelets. A colorful Native-inspired piece can add a bold element to whatever else you’re wearing. Not only that, but it’s also a very eye-catching look to rock if worn in a subtle, yet noticeable way.

There is however, the argument that ‘Native’ fashion can be seen as offensive to Native American people. Many well known brands in the fashion industry, Urban Outfitters, Vans, and Levi (just to name a few) have sought to replicate Indian trade blanket patterns. Urban Outfitters has even been sued by the Navajo Nation, one of this country’s largest Native American tribes, when the company came out with a line of products that they claimed were “Navajo”. If you’re interested in learning more about the line between Native American culture and fashion, I would definitely recommend reading this article: http://www.collectorsweekly.com/articles/why-the-native-fashion-trend-is-pissing-off-real-native-americans/

In admiration of the aesthetic of Native American prints, you might be surprised at how easy it is to incorporate these prints without looking too tacky.  Zig zags, arrowheads, and Native American influences are a fashion-forward option and pair with solid, bold colors, leather jackets, or any plain top that needs a little dressing up.

Some things to look for if you decide rock this trend are: tiers, angular shapes, feathers, Native American prints, gold, turquoise, and geometric hardware. Some looks I’ve discovered even have shimmery sequins if you’re looking for a mix of glam and tribal. Take a look at some of the pieces I’ve found that reflect  intricately beautiful Native American or Aztec-inspired designs.
