It all started with Nicole Richie sporting the famous Alexander McQueen chiffon skull scarf in 2009. More recently, however, the skull has gained popularity on the trend radar and can be seen on rings, blazers, flats, purses, and even TOMS. Instead of being creepy and limited to a dark, gothic style, the skull has become a wearable trend that can even be embellished with feminine touches. I was just at H&M a couple weeks ago and noticed a charcoal sweater with an embroidered lace skull (pictured below) and just had to have it. The juxtaposition of “girly” and “goth” is a popular trend if you’re looking for something different.
What I really like about the skull trend is that you don’t exactly have to be a rebel in order to pull it off. There are tons of options in terms of tops and accessories that make the skull trend very elegant. It is definitely possible to look adorable and fashionable wearing this trend without looking like a character in a Tim Burton film. It is important to know though, that less is more when it comes to wearing the skull trend. Try to stick to one element of this trend, and layer darker colors or even a dark lip if you feel daring.
Whether you’re looking for something sparkly, lacy, studded, or grungy, there is a skull-inspired look out there for you.
