Marquette’s season likely came to an end Tuesday afternoon due to a 2-1 loss to Georgetown in the first round of the Big East tournament.

Senior Austin Martz scored the game winner to send the Hoyas to the conference semifinals, ending Marquette’s quest to win their second straight Big East tournament title.

The first half of play looked very similar to the match the teams played earlier in the season. Georgetown controlled possession for most of the play, but neither side was able to get on the board. Each team had one stellar opportunity to take an early advantage. In the 18th minute redshirt junior Axel Sjoberg blocked a shot right on the line to keep things level. Sophomore Coco Navarro had the best opportunity for the Golden Eagles in the 31st minute, but his one-time shot in the box went just wide.

Sophomore Brett Campbell had two stellar opportunities at the start of the second half. His shot from yards away was deflected away by sophomore Louis Bennett II. The ensuing Georgetown corner kick led to another chance for Campbell, this time resulting in the ball striking the crossbar.

Big East Rookie of the Year Arun Basuljevic broke the ice in the 60th minute after a Marquette turnover lead to a three-on-two opportunity. Junior Melvin Snoh crossed past the center player over to Basuljevic on the left side. Redshirt senior keeper Charlie Lyon aggressively challenged Basuljevic, but the Georgetown midfielder calmly shot around him.

Marquette got a break two minutes later, getting on the board with an own goal by the Hoyas.

Just when it appeared that the Golden Eagles were back in it Georgetown crashed the net, exploiting a rare lack of structure in the Marquette backline. Freshman Christopher Lema found Martz on the back post, and he tapped in the decisive goal.

Senior midfielder Brady Wahl was a late scratch for Marquette. Also sitting out was freshman midfielder Alex McBride, who also missed the DePaul match with an ankle injury.

The Golden Eagles season is likely over, as odds for an at-large bid are slim due to their struggles in conference play this season. If their season is over, the Golden Eagles finished the year with an 8-6-4 record (2-3-4 Big East) and a first round exit from the conference tournament. It’s a disappointing ending to a promising season, featuring one of the strongest groups of talent Marquette has assembled.

Georgetown will play Xavier in the second round at PPL Park on Friday.
