Bears. BEATS. Battlestar Galactica. – October 4th, 2012

Today on Bears. BEATS. Battlestar Galactica., we’re answering one of life’s biggest questions: what does Oscar Wilde have to do with Jack Black? Stay tuned to find out!

Within the past year or so, I’ve been told multiple times that I should read The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. I know very little about the book and very little about its author other than his (supposed) last words were “either those curtains go, or I do.” I do know, though, that there is a wonderful song by Company of Thieves called Oscar Wilde and it is wonderful. As long as we’re on the topic of “wilde” things, we’ll take a listen to Flo Rida‘s song Wild One. Though that song is peppy and upbeat, Sia, who was featured on the Flo Rida track, has a serious side to her music, too, as you can hear in her song Breathe Me.

Greg Laswell has been on tour with Sia and has collaborated with many other quality musicians. His song Come Back Down was recently a free download on iTunes and features our next artist, Sara Bareilles. Bareilles is not one to sing about how enslaved to love she is. A prime example of this is her song Fairytale, which chronicles fairytale princesses after the happy endings. Unlike Bareilles, who states that she doesn’t care for the fairy tales, Russian-American artist Elizaveta sings about how she believes in fairy tales (and serendipitous encounters) in her song Dreamer. The next artist we’ll hear is also Russian-American and is one of the artists you will often hear on #BBBSG, Regina Spektor. Here is Don’t Leave Me (Ne Me Quitte Pas).

Although you never hear the words in English, don’t leave me is a prominent phrase in Spektor’s song. Pink uses the phrase as well in her song Please Don’t Leave Me. Although many people think that Pink got her stage name because of her formerly pink hair, that’s not the case. Many artist in the music industry have had pink hair and one such example is British singer Ellie Goulding. Both her original music and her covers are unique and beautiful; a prime example is her rendition of Elton John’s Your Song. I started listening to Ellie Goulding over two years ago at the same time I began listening to American singer-songwriter Lissie. Unbeknownst to me, the two are purportedly good friends after touring together in 2010. Up next, We’ll have Lissie‘s song Record Collector.

There’s another American artist who goes by the nickname Lissie (or Lissy) and that happens to be former model and indie singer songwriter Lissy Trullie. Here’s her song Ready for the Floor. Lissy Trullie has has worked with another former model turned singer, Tristan Prettyman. Prettyman has been getting a lot of radio play with her song My Oh My (I’ve been listening to her since about 2005, though). Another one of her songs is a free download on iTunes right now along with this next song, Clarity (feat. Foxes) by Zedd. Clarity is also the title of a song off of John Mayer‘s second album, Heavier Things. Mayer tried to transition to a more bluesy style in 2005 and collaborated with well known blues artists, such as B.B. King and Eric Clapton. Here’s Clapton’s Let it Rain. One of the more popular bands that Clapton played with was the band Cream, who he started playing with in 1966. Cream had their song Sunshine of Your Love featured on the soundtrack for School of Rock. That movie happened to star Jack Black as a rock-obsessed fake substitute teacher.
