Why Fall is the Perfect Time to Try Out a New Trend

Hello, hello, loyal readers! (Can I call you that if this is only my fourth post?) I’m here today, not to mock any styles or trends—although I do maintain that Uggs are fug and should only be worn when absolutely necessary—but to explain why now is the perfect time to try out a new one.

We’ll start with the obvious: it’s cold out. You’ll be wearing a coat. If anything goes wrong, keep the coat on and no one will be the wiser; you could just be really cold. Throw on that skull shirt (http://marquettejournal.org/blogs/trending-topics/how-to-wear-skulls/) that you’ve been afraid to try out and head to class. Even just wearing it under your coat where no one can see it (yet) will make you feel more confident. Once you’re more comfortable, take your coat off; you’ll most likely receive great praise—especially if you’re following the wonderful blogs the MU Journal Style section has to offer—and consider yourself ridiculous for not trying it out sooner.

Another reason to try out a new trend now is that the Fall/Winter 2012 trends—as deemed by the fashion gurus of the world—are super easy and adaptable. Most involve colors like oxblood (check out this post by another style blogger, Emily Garbutt http://marquettejournal.org/blogs/trending-topics/from-catwalk-to-classroom-5-ways-to-rock-this-seasons-hottest-trend/) and deep berry hues, so find an article of clothing or accessory you’re comfortable with in one of these colors. Asos.com has an awesome list of the F/W ’12 trends, so check them out here: http://us.asos.com/Trend-Fashion-Trends-Online-ASOS/yfk5q/?cid=15973&WT.ac=AW12_main.

Try a funky geometric shirt like this one with black jeans and boots. It’s a super easy and not an overwhelming outfit; it can easily be worn to class.

An easy way to try out the military trend is to wear this olive green top with black jeans and brown boots (combat or not).

If you want to test the waters without fully committing, try out something from one of your friends; that way, you save money and can decide if you like it first. Starting small is the best way to incorporate a new style into your wardrobe.

Lastly, why not try a new trend?

What’s the worst that could happen? It is truly a liberating feeling to overcome something that you’ve always been unsure or uneasy about, even if it is only trying a new style of clothing. I’m not trying to get all fashion-philosophical on you, because it would probably end up something like this (for all you Modern Family fans out there),

but the next time you see something really cute at the store and think, “Ohh that’s so cute but it’s really not me,” instead think, “Well why can’t it be?” Answer: it can. You just have to own it, work it, live it.
