For teeth as white as snow (ahem, happy first snow fall, Marquette), check out these natural solutions:
1) Saliva: It helps eliminate teeth stains and neutralizes acid that causes tooth decay. Eat foods like celery, apples, pears, carrots or chew sugar-free gum to trigger that spit!
2) Strawberries: Cut a strawberry in half. Rub the seedless side on your teeth until they are stained pink. Leave the pink for 5-10 minutes, then brush as usual.
3) Baking Soda: Dip damp toothbrush bristles into baking soda, cover with toothpaste (optional), and brush as usual.
4) Olive Oil: This is a wives tail, but worth trying if you have especially discolored teeth. After brushing, rub teeth with a wash cloth dipped in olive oil.
Teeth stainers:
1) Sugary drinks like dark soda, lemonade, sports drinks, fruit juices. Be sure to swish mouth with water right after drinking to prevent enamel decay.
2) Dark berries and beets: these are great for you, so eat them–just be sure to brush or swish your mouth with water right away.
3) Coffee or dark tea
4) Smoking cigarettes: nicotine causes brown stains that penetrate the groves and pits of tooth enamel and can be hard to remove by brushing alone (MedicineNet.com).
