Dislike: Facebook Envy

There’s no doubt in my mind that every Facebook user has experienced “status envy” at some point.

It happens when you’re browsing your news feed. You can’t help but wish a “dislike” button existed so when your old neighbor or acquaintance from high school posts, “just got hired,” or “I have the best boyfriend ever!” you can tastefully “dislike” and show off your cynical side that life isn’t always sunshine and sprinkles.

I’m getting irritated just thinking about it.

It’s a contagious bug. Mostly because Facebook invites profile creeping. Some people spend hours clicking through a friend’s photo album. How easy, then, to wish it was your face in the pictures.

Rest assured worried warts: your Facebook friends probably feel the same way when looking at your profile. Haven’t you ever noticed how witty and spicy you try and make your statuses? Or how you only post pictures that show off your good side? Well, those people you envy are doing the exact same thing.

Reality check: People only put the good stuff on the Internet. The next time you start to envy a status, remember: We are not in a fairy tale, so stop pretending like other people live in one.
