Climb Up Your Life!

We may live in the flat lands of the Midwest, but on Marquette University’s campus, inclines are everywhere. From the stairs in Raynor Library to the hill on Wisconsin Ave. toward Mashuda Hall, this campus is a hotbed of interval training opportunities.

Here are three ways to utilize the natural ups and downs of campus:

    Where: Raynor Library’s Central Staircase

What: Turn your toes outward 45 degrees while placing your entire foot on the stair. Opening your stance targets your inner thighs while slowly walking up the staircase. Make sure your entire foot (from toes to heel) fits on the deep stair steps–doing this will engage your entire leg, not just your calves.

Where: 16th and Wisconsin Ave. toward Mashuda Hall (3 blocks) or 16th and Wells St. toward the Lake (about 1.5 miles)

What:  Both of these straight-shots offer a convenient interval workout. Interval workouts alternate between an anaerobic and aerobic activity. Power walk the uphill to slowly burn calories and build muscle mass. Sprint the downhill to purge calories and improve your cardiovascular endurance.

    Where: AMU central staircase

What: Unlike Raynor, these steps are narrow and steep. With toes pointed forward, step up with the ball of your foot. As you step, be sure to push up your hanging heel and squeeze your glutes. This motion isolates your calves and glutes because of the sharp incline. Take short, rapid steps for a quick cardio tone-up.
