The Premiere of “The Undocumented”

Tonight in Johnston Hall room 103, Marquette University hosted the premiere viewing of “The Undocumented.” Award-winning documenter Marco Williams dove deep into the stories behind the 2,000 deaths and skeletons that remain from migrants crossing the Mexican-Arizona boarders since 1998.

This film takes another point of view on immigration that the media ignores to follow. Families open up to Williams, allowing him to capture the process of finding lost members. Viewer discretion is advised, but the images from the Mexican Consulate (who identify dead border crossers) serve a strong purpose to give audience members the full magnitude of migrant deaths.

Williams followed the screening with a question and answer. He expressed a concern that PBS wants to censor/blur the faces and torsos of the deceased. Will this take the intensifying effect away from the viewers? It is an ethical decision to make; however, this is one film that the nation should be exposed to.

“The Undocumented” is premiering on PBS April 29 in the documentary series Independent Lens.
