New MUSG committee to focus on allocations

Free t-shirts and free food were the big draws, said Caitlin West, a College of Communication junior and the emcee of the event.,”A new Marquette Student Government committee is aiming to take a fresh look at one of MUSG's biggest responsibilities: Student Organization Allocations.

The Ad-Hoc Committee on Funding of Student Activities will seek to evaluate patterns of MUSG funding for student activities and will prepare procedural recommendations for the MUSG Senate, according to Legislative Vice President and College of Arts & Sciences junior Jason Rae. The recommendations, which are to be submitted to Rae, are due by Jan. 1, 2008.

The committee will dissolve after Jan. 1, Rae said.

Student Organization Allocations, or SOAs, are funds allotted to student organizations and club sports teams for special events. A seven-member SOA committee determines the sizes of the allocations.

The Ad-Hoc Committee on Funding of Student Activities will not be responsible for determining specific and future allocations, Rae said.

Rae, who proposed the creation of the committee to the MUSG Executive Board, said the committee was not created out of any specific concerns.

"This is an area we are always trying to improve upon, always trying to make more efficient," he said.

The committee is chaired by Giuseppe Pappalardo, College of Arts & Sciences senator and sophomore. Five other senators also serve on the committee, as well as Financial Vice President and College of Business Administration senior Tim Smith, who serves as an ex officio member.

Reserve Fund Presentation

Smith gave a presentation on the Reserve Fund at Thursday night's meeting.

The Reserve Fund is the collection of unspent money from previous MUSG budgets.

The current balance of the fund is about $190,000, Smith said. The fund has been used in recent years to finance items such as two community service vans, a DVD projector for Varsity Theatre and the flag display in front of Raynor Library.

The Reserve Fund can be used to fund projects with approval from the budget committee and a two-thirds vote from the Senate. According to MUSG bylaws, the Reserve Fund cannot be lower than 10 percent of the annual budget. This year's budget is $447,000, Smith said.

Other Issues

MUSG President Brock Banks, a College of Arts & Sciences senior, appointed a Survey Steering Committee. The seven-person committee will be responsible for creating surveys to access student opinion on issues such as the Upass and textbook-buying options, Banks said. Banks hopes to get the survey e-mailed to students by the end of next month, he said.

Executive Vice President and College of Arts & Sciences junior Sara Soriano announced Megan Ward, a College of Business Administration junior, has been appointed senior speaker coordinator. The deadline for senior speaker nominations has been extended to Wednesday, Oct. 24.
