Just over four minutes into Marquette's 93-82 loss to Connecticut Wednesday, senior guard Dominic James drove hard to the baseline before stopping on a dime and kicking the ball back out to a teammate.
It was a simple — even insignificant — play that took on a much more pointed meaning when James began limping down the court. James left the game and never returned to action, having fractured the fifth metatarsal in his left foot.
James was unavailable for comment after the game, but coach Buzz Williams assured reporters at the postgame press conference that James' career at Marquette was complete.
"It's probably a 100-day recovery window, same exact injury that happened to (forward) Liam McMorrow," Williams said. "We're hurtful as a program, we're hurtful as an institution for Dominic. He has been absolutely incredible throughout his career."
With his start against the Huskies, James passed Ousmane Barro for most career games played with 128.
Williams turned to junior guard Maurice Acker, who averaged just 8.8 minutes per game going into Wednesday night's game. Acker played 33 minutes, scoring six points, grabbing three rebounds and dishing out four assists.
"I didn't know how serious the injury was, so I was thinking 'Man, am I about to play the whole game?'" Acker said. "I noticed that when we came on the court at halftime he was on crutches so that's when I realized I had to play the whole game."
James leads the Golden Eagles with 143 assists on the season. That's 26 more than Jerel McNeal, who is second on the team. James' 11.4 points per game were good enough for fourth on the team, and he'll likely finish his career as Marquette's third-highest scorer (1,749 points).
