MUSG allocates funds for student organizations

President Brock Banks also announced possible plans for themed dining halls in his address.

,”Student Organization Allocations are provisions given to student organizations and club sports teams seeking funds.

-The SOA committee allocated $22,196 among 13 organizations and three club sports teams.

-Among the highest allocations were $4,750 to the Financial Management Association to participate in the Wall Street Experience, $3,951 to the Coalition of Language Honor Societies for an on-campus foreign film festival and $3,130 to the Waterski & Wakeboard Club to participate in the National Collegiate Waterski Association Nationals.

How MUSG's SOA process works:

All student organizations and club sports teams seeking financial allocations from MUSG must complete a funding request form.

Organizations and teams that have made other fundraising efforts are likely to receive more funding.

Funding of the event: The organization or team must list the specific costs of the event, the funding anticipated by MUSG and all other sources of funding.

Funding request forms are due at 5 p.m. in the MUSG office (AMU room 133) on the date listed for the specific allocating period.

The funding request form goes to the Student Organization Allocation Committee. The seven-person committee of MUSG senators decides how much funding, if any, to give each request.

Requests for less than $750 face a majority up or down vote from the committee.

Requests of more than $750 require five committee votes.

Requests for more than $1,500 need five committee votes and a majority vote from the senate. The senate can vote to decrease the allocation or approve it as is.

MUSG can fund:

 Speakers or educational events

 Documentaries, films and performances

 Advertising and publicity for events

Events, services or activities that are open to the entire membership of Marquette and that enhance the Marquette community.

MUSG cannot fund:

 Recruiting or fundraising events

Capital goods (i.e. T-shirts or prizes)

 Recruiting or fundraising events

Operating expenses (i.e. expenses incurred outside of the current fundraising period)

Any event that charges admission fees.

President's Report

-In his report, MUSG President Brock Banks, senior in the College of Arts & Sciences, spoke about a student focus group created by the university this summer that sought feedback about possible changes to dining hall services.

-"Rather than all the dining halls offering similar options, what's being considered is creating separate, themed dining halls," Banks said.

-Banks said the plan is still in preliminary stages.

Financial Policies Amendment

-MUSG also changed a part of its financial policies at the meeting. The senate unanimously approved an amendment to the MUSG Expenditure Procedures, which changes the requirements for student organizations seeking reimbursement for general expenses.

-Having previously been required to present a paid receipt or contract, student organizations can now provide other proof of payment, such as an invoice, canceled check, bank statement or credit card statement.

Concert Funding Request

-During the student forum, Matt Montgomery, general manager of Marquette University Radio and a junior in the College of Communication, requested $1,000 in funding for a concert featuring Murder By Death. The concert would be free to students and is scheduled for Oct. 11 in the Union Sports Annex, Montgomery said. student organizations can now provide other proof of payment, such as an invoice, canceled check, bank statement or credit card statement. Jon Dooley, MUSG adviser and associate dean of student development, said the new policy is similar to that of other university departments.

Miscellaneous

-Trenell Darby, former senator from the College of Nursing, resigned after transferring to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Legislative Vice President Jason Rae said.

-According to Banks, the Office of the Bursar is considering creating a program to teach students personal financial management.
