Marquette, MUSG scrap plans to renovate AMU

The plan to donate $100,000 from the Marquette Student Government reserve fund to the university for a renovation of the Alumni Memorial Union first floor is off the table, according to MUSG President and College of Business Administration senior Dan Calandriello.

The idea to spend the money drew controversy from students and MUSG senators because the proposed renovation timeline was between one and five years, according to Calandriello.

Marquette Director of Auxiliary Services Todd Vicker and nearly a dozen senators also expressed concerns that the renovation blueprints did not include enough hangout space.

In response to the criticism, the university has withdrawn the renovation plan and is looking into creating blueprints for a renovation that will better respond to student needs.

There is no timeline as to when the blueprints will be revised. However, at the Feb. 20 Father Wild Forum, Marquette Senior Vice President Greg Kliebhan said the project is unlikely to see further action until the renovation of the Varsity Theatre is complete.

In response, Calandriello has decided not to propose the bill asking for use of MUSG funds to go into the renovation.

"The renovation plans are not concrete enough to spend money on at this time," Calandriello said.
