The pitfalls of faking it

"It's more fun with a fake!" said a sophomore in the College of Nursing.

A College of Engineering junior said it was a "blast" to have a fake ID.

Marquette students have fake IDs, they get caught all the time and, for the most part, a fake ID is an easily accessible item. If it gets taken away, most students can get a new one within a few days of losing the original.

The consequences of having a fake ID are ever-present to those who use them.

According to Department of Public Safety Captain Russ Shaw, DPS does not keep a running tab on the number of fake IDs they confiscate, nor can they determine what percent of Marquette students have fake IDs. Over the course of this semester, seven fake ID confiscations have been accounted in the Tribune's DPS reports.

According to Shaw, DPS confiscates more fake IDs because students accidentally hand them over to DPS officers at the front desk at residence halls.

"Believe it or not, we get two-thirds of fake IDs from students because they hand them to us instead of their student IDs," Shaw said.

DPS then gives the offending student a referral to meet with the Milwaukee Police Department, where they determine whether the student will be issued a citation, he said.

According to Mark McCarthy, Office of Student Development dean, DPS and OSD give a presentation at freshmen orientation about the dangers of alcohol abuse and of having a fake.

Associate Dean of Student Development Stephanie Quade handles most of the discipline cases regarding fake IDs.

"The punishment for a student with a fake ID depends on whether they have gotten in trouble before," she said. "If the student lives in a residence hall they are at the minimum assigned a warning."

Quade said if students are caught with fake IDs for a second time, they are put on probation and their parents may be contacted.

"(In) extreme cases, where a student is manufacturing fake IDs, we would definitely give them probation and possible suspension from the university," she said.

The punishments may be severe, but many students still have fake IDs anyway.

Students spoke with the Tribune on the condition of anonymity.

A sophomore in the College of Arts & Sciences said he has had a fake ID since his junior year of high school.

"I find it easier to get into trouble in the dorms," he said. "So in all honesty, it is safer to drink at the bars as opposed to the dorms."

A College of Engineering junior said when she came to Marquette, she was against getting a fake ID.

"My parents were totally okay with me drinking and partying, but they had always warned me of the danger of using a fake," she said.

She said she got in trouble in the dorms for being in the presence of alcohol. She said she and her parents agreed that if she could not have a drink in the dorm, she should be able to go out to bars.

Although she is now 21 and has no use for a fake ID, she said she was glad she had one when she did.

"I would rather go out to a bar with my pals than to some random house party, where I could pay five dollars to wait in line for cheap beer out of dirty cups," she said.

Nicole Schahczinski, a sophomore in the College of Health Sciences, said she has never had a fake ID.

"I do not have many friends who have fake IDs, but it is not like I couldn't get one," she said.

Schahczinski said she usually goes to off-campus parties on the weekends but is looking forward to going to bars.

"I have older friends who go to bars but I just do not go with them," she said.

Tim Liston, a junior in the College of Communication, works the door at Murphy's Irish Pub. He said that nine out of 10 times the ID he confiscates is not fake, but it is not the person's real ID.

"Most of the time I can tell that their ID is fake once they walk in the door," he said. "A lot of times girls will talk a lot to get my attention off the ID."

Linton said he usually makes students sign their name if he thinks an ID is fake but the student knows all the information on the ID, he said.
