On their latest click to the Marquette Web site, visitors may have noticed a major redesign of the undergraduate pages.
The redesigned pages were launched this month in order to complement the latest version of what the university refers to as its "Big Book," which also came out this month, according to Dean of Undergraduate Admissions Roby Blust.
With the new undergraduate Web site, students and parents will have an electronic means to check out the same information found in the book, Blust said.
The site is more user-friendly for prospective students and the layout is designed for content to be higher on the page, according to Tom Pionek, senior Web marketing strategist in the Office of Marketing and Communication.
The design aims for consistency with the print piece, Pionek said.
The Big Book, also called the Marquette Viewbook, first came out about six years ago and has been updated periodically; however, Blust said this is the first time it has been completely redesigned.
"It was time to update it," he said.
The book, published for prospective students and their families, contains approximately 150 pages of information ranging from "9 Things You Should Know About Marquette" to a Milwaukee city guide.
Blust said the redesign took at least a year and a half to complete and that his staff is pleased with the new book.
The printed book, which has more pages than in the past, will be mailed this month to prospective students in their junior year of high school, about six months earlier than in the past, Blust said.
The overhaul of the undergraduate Web site pages is a precursor to a major site redesign for Marquette.edu coming later this year, but Pionek said not to expect anything to be launched soon.
The whole site redesign is still in the planning stages, he said.
"The new site is still being defined and we need to work through what the scope of the project is first," he said. "We're looking to roll it out later this year."
Pionek said a new Web site would not be launched without feedback and that the current redesigned pages are a way to test out some of the university's ideas.
Senior Assistant Dean of Admission Jeff Lochowicz, an alumnus of Marquette, notes on the final page of the Big Book: "Unlike most universities, we 'build our own stuff.' Our award-winning publications are designed, written and produced in-house. . We want you to learn about 'us,' especially who we are as an institution, from our students, faculty and staff – not from publications consultants and marketing firms."
