Yamagata’s debut not ‘worn down’

Rachael Yamagata's arrival could be the second coming of Fiona Apple or the next generation Norah Jones. There is no doubt she is the real thing. Her debut solo album Happenstance, has brought comparisons to Apple and Jones.

The sultry songstress provides angst-ridden lyrics of love and loss, but also optimistic about life and future loves. Along with deep lyrics, Yamagata brings a unique voice.

Yamagata's first single, "Worn Me Down," is the only song on the album that seems formulated for mainstream radio play. The rest of the album would seem more fitting performed in a quiet piano bar captivating a small audience.

With elements of folk, rock, pop, jazz, soul and even a bit of cabaret, Happenstance provides it all.

"I Want You" is a throwback to the time of cabaret and dance halls. "My friends are telling me I shouldn't waste my time/ But I can't concentrate until I make you mine." The lyrics of the song paint a picture of longing infatuation, but the music is upbeat.

The CD is perfect for a mellow, romantic or emotional mood. Yamagata provides a CD where each song should be contemplated, and not one song should be skipped.
