Rivera seeks first elected office

    A Milwaukee businessman with experience in education and state government, Rivera is seeking his first elected office.

    Rivera was born in Puerto Rico and grew up in Milwaukee, attending Pulaski High School.,”Looking to unseat Gwen Moore in Wisconsin's 4th Congressional District is Republican Perfecto Rivera.

    A Milwaukee businessman with experience in education and state government, Rivera is seeking his first elected office.

    Rivera was born in Puerto Rico and grew up in Milwaukee, attending Pulaski High School.

    He spent four years in the United States Air Force, serving as a survival instructor and attaining the rank of sergeant.

    After attending the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Rivera spent a number of years working within the Milwaukee Public School system. He directed the Special Education summer program at the Manitoba Orthopedic School and taught at the View School, which he had attended as a child.

    In 1978, Rivera and his brother started Rivera & Associates, a marketing and advertising agency. In 1989, Rivera was named Executive Assistant to the Secretary of Revenue by then-Governor Tommy Thompson. The following year, Rivera joined the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority as an Economic Development Officer.

    Rivera is currently the Vice President of Community Relations for Merchants & Manufacturers Bancorp, a position he has held since 1998.

    In January 2002, President Bush selected Rivera as a member of the Presidential Delegation to Honduras.

    Rivera ran unopposed in this year's Republican primary.

    During this year's campaign, Rivera has stated positions:

     In favor of tax reductions, particularly for businesses

     In favor of school choice vouchers, which would allocate tuition vouchers for families opting to send their children to private schools in areas where public schools do not meet established standards

     In favor of medical malpractice liability reform

     Against same-sex marriage

     Against abortion

     Against embryonic stem-cell research, which he has described as immoral

     In favor of the war in Iraq, which he has described as a matter of national security

     Against raising the minimum retirement age or mandatory privatization of social security accounts

     In favor of tighter border security, but also in favor of citizenship opportunities for illegal immigrants

     In favor of tax incentives designed to encourage energy-saving practices and renewable energy development.

    Rivera is married, with four children and six grandchildren.
