Program to stop pirating missing from campus

A year after the university heralded its participation in Define the Line, a program opposing illegal sharing of software, the program is absent from campus.

The program, owned and operated by the Business Software Alliance, was launched in October 2004.

In 2005, Marquette sent out a press release stating it was one of the first universities in the country to join Define the Line. Kathy Lang, chief information officer of Information Technology Services, said in a release at the time, "Define the Line helps Marquette take a proactive stance on illegal downloading before it becomes a problem."

In fall 2005, freshmen had to attend a part of orientation in which Define the Line was brought up and discussed.

But after a year, the program cannot be found on campus.

"We have not heard from the company for quite some time," Lang said.
