Housing unclear for sex offenders

The state cannot force Milwaukee County to provide housing for sexual predators on supervised release, according to a ruling passed down from the state's District 1 Court of Appeals Oct. 17, but the question of where those people should be housed still remains.

The case applies to Billy Lee Morford, a repeat child molester who has been on supervised release since 2001, according to Bill Francis, his parole officer.

Morford is the only sex offender released under the Chapter 980 supervision program in Milwaukee County. The program is designed to provide treatment for sexually violent offenders after prison.

According to Rod McWilliams, spokesman for Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker, the state needs to stop trying to make the county house sex offenders that are in the state justice system.

Walker released a statement Oct. 17 responding to the court's decision.
