The Marquette women’s soccer team handily defeated Illinois State Friday night, 3-0, and move on to play the winner of Princeton-West Virginia in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers-Mountaineers matchup will take place tomorrow night.

Marquette scored less than four minutes into the match on a goal by senior forward Lisa Philbin and didn’t look back.

In the 27th minute, the Golden Eagles went up 2-0 when senior midfielder Ally Miller sent in a bullet from about 25 yards out. Sophomore Mary Luba punched in the team’s third and final goal with 21:30 remaining in the second half.

The Golden Eagles, seeded No. 4 in their region, had to fight off a dedicated Illinois State squad that came out firing to begin the second half after falling behind 2-0 at intermission.

The Redbirds maintained possession for a significant amount of time in the opening 20 minutes of the second half and denied Marquette any chances to cushion its lead. An Illinois State shot against a nearly open net sailed high at the midway point of the first half and it had a similar opportunity at the 20th minute of the second half, but the Golden Eagles persisted.

With the win, the Golden Eagles move to 17-2-2 on the season and have extended their unbeaten streak to 15 games. The shutout is the team’s 16th of the season, which leads the nation.

If BYU beat Utah State tomorrow night, the Golden Eagles matchup with Princeton or West Virginia will take place in Provo, Utah, next Thursday. If the Cougars fall, Marquette will host the game Friday night.
