The Milwaukee County Election Commission recertified the recall election of 6th District Alderman Michael McGee Jr. Monday morning.

The primary for the recall election will be April 3 at the same time as the general spring elections. The recall election will be held on May 1.

"The fact that it's a separate election will cost the city around $20,000," said Neil Albrecht, assistant director of the election commission. He said the money will come out of the commission's budget.

The election commission has been flip-flopping about the recall in recent months.

In January the commissioners certified the recall, organized by 6th District resident ViAnna Jordan last fall.

Initially, the commission verified enough of Jordan's 2,923 collected signatures to certify the recall despite statements from commissioners that they found evidence of fraud and corruption in signature-collection methods, including deceiving the public about what the petition would accomplish.

About two weeks later the Wisconsin State Elections Board reviewed the commission's decision, declared the decision invalid and ordered the commission to re-discuss the matter.

Three election commissioners testified before the board that they felt pressured in their original decision.

"They basically asked for more time to be confident in their decision," Albrecht said.

Albrecht also said that while the commission felt the circulation of the recall petition may have been fraudulent, "they recognized their limitations as an investigatory body" and felt the commission's decision followed state law.

A press release from the commission said five candidates, in addition to Jordan and McGee, have declared their candidacy. The candidates are Jerlean Bradley-Hootsell, David King, Walter Love, Josephine Morris and Una Van Duvall.
