Eagles look to improve

Fresh off of its first event of the year, the women's tennis team will look to make a solid showing at the 30th Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic this weekend. The event will be held at the Western Racquet Club in Elm Grove, a Milwaukee suburb.

Marquette will play two doubles matches against Illinois State at 9 a.m. Friday. Later that day, the Golden Eagles square off against Dayton in two singles matches. Marquette will see one additional team, Wisconsin-Green Bay, over the three days.

"We're trying to see things in these fall matches that you don't see in practice," assistant coach Valerie Vladea said.

The event is the second of four on Marquette's fall schedule. Sophomore Erin Watkins, sophomore Maria Calbeto, junior Dominika Dabrowski and junior Katie Donovan will see action. Donovan dominated her first singles match of the year last Sunday at the Bronco Invitational (Kalamazoo, Mich.), defeating Jenna Tellefsen of Minnesota 6-0, 6-1.

Junior Francina Bonnelly and Calbeto paired to win two doubles matches last Friday. Dabrowski went 1-1 in singles in Kalamazoo, and 1-2 in doubles.

Both the men's and women's teams will compete in Elm Grove this weekend, starting at 9:00 a.m. Friday.
