City, campus events commemorate 9/11

Milwaukee will remember 9/11 through protests and poetry.

A silent vigil will be held to call for the investigation into the events of 9/11 to be reopened. The "Vigil for 9/11 Truth" will be held at 11 a.m. at Reuss Federal Plaza, 310 W. Wisconsin Ave. The vigil is affiliated with Peace Action Wisconsin.

"It's taking place at the same time as the vigil at ground zero, where they have been holding vigils every Saturday for a while, so it's in solidarity with the families as well," said Rob Steinhofer, an organizer.

At noon, the vigil will go to Red Arrow Park for the 9/11 Truth Rally, which also calls for an investigation into what happened that day. Red Arrow Park is located at East Kilbourn Avenue and North Water Street. The Milwaukee Coalition for a Just Peace is sponsoring the rally.

On Saturday night, the Woodland Pattern Book Center, 720 E. Locust St., will hold a poetry reading, sponsored by Poets Against the War.

"There's a group of… 18 poets who will be reading their poetry for three to five minutes each," said Stacy Szymaszek, the literary program manager. "I don't think that there are any events that allow people to express their thoughts and feelings (on the events of 9/11), so this fills a need."

The program is being held as part of Poets Against the War's call to remember the tragedies that occurred on 9/11. The event is free and begins at 2 p.m.

As for events at Marquette, the fraternity Sigma Chi is planning a day of service, according to Jon Dooley, the assistant dean of student development.

MUSG Senator C.J. Hoffman, a sophomore in the College of Engineering, is planning a day of events in front of the John P. Raynor, S.J. Library. He said there are no concrete plans. People will be informed of the specific events through university e-mail.
