Mascot mulled

I am astonished that Dr. John McAdams —who authored the Sept. 21 Viewpoint "Professor blasts anti-Warrior 'leftists'" — who is an associate professor in the Department of Political Science at Marquette, uses political correctness as a pejorative.

Since when did being responsive and sensitive to complex issues become foolish? In addition, how is trivializing and objectifying an entire culture for the entertainment of sports fans respectful?

Name-calling and easy jabs reflect the argumentative and demeaning tone of a Rush Limbaugh style diatribe, not the thoughtful, nuanced debate that should go on at a university. The irrational response to this issue is to shoot from the hip without considering any of the valid arguments from the other side.

Let's put this in perspective. After all, this is a debate over the name of a team. This should be insignificant next to the Jesuit values that are the essence of Marquette education.

Who is this guy McAdams and why is he guiding and influencing our young people? I don't quarrel with his right to hold his opinion but — in spite of his position as an educator — he apparently quarrels with mine.
