Raynor, AMU offer places for studying

Class begins today, and with the first squawk of the bell comes the signal that it's time to hit the books. But where to go?

There are many options depending on student study preferences. College of Arts & Sciences sophomore Katie Kelly said she needs quiet and studies either at the John P. Raynor, S.J. Library or a dorm study lounge.

However, if a student needs background noise, like College of Communication junior Meghan Moriarty, the Alumni Memorial Union is perfect.

"I can't have quiet," Moriarty said, who hunts for the "comfy couches" at the AMU, where students mix socializing and studying.

Other popular places to study include the Cudahy Hall computer lab 108, open 24 hours and the various Brew Bayou locations at the AMU, Straz Hall, Cudahy Hall and the bridge at Raynor.

As for the act of studying itself, second-year law student Andrea Neuman has several pieces of advice for new college students.

"Schedule time—don't just figure it's going to happen," Neuman said. "Learn how to discipline yourself, because no one is here to do it for you."

For students who would like more specific studying tips, The Advising Center — part of the College of Arts & Sciences — offers several workshops geared toward freshmen and sophomores.

The workshop topics include: Study Skills on Sept. 20, Time Management on Sept. 21, Transitions to College on Sept. 22, Test Taking Techniques on Sept. 23 and Major Exploration on Sept. 27.

Mary Minson, the director of The Advising Center, said the workshops are open to students from all colleges. Students can reserve their place by calling the center at 288-5989 or stopping at the center, located in Marquette Hall 208.
