MUSG to focus on communication

Executive board members of Marquette Student Government said they are placing communication as a high priority among their goals this semester.

According to MUSG president Kate Agnew, on Tuesday, Jan. 27, MUSG will host the "We Are Marquette" event in the Alumni Memorial Union ballrooms. The event, planned to be a way for students to interact with administration on another level, is the brainchild of Paul Bergl, MUSG executive vice president.

Alumni, members of the community and faculty will also be present.

"I have no doubt it will be a wonderful event," Bergl said of the event that is intended to define what makes Marquette great and how to assure a strong future for the university.

Agnew said MUSG is opening the lines of communication with the athletic department concerning student seating at the Bradley Center for men's basketball games.

Agnew, Bergl and four senators met on Dec. 29 with a group of administrators to discuss the financial implications of increasing the size of the student section.

The athletic department is planning to re-seat its regular season ticket holders for the 2005-'06 season and student seating will also be affected by the change, Athletic Director Bill Cords said in the Nov. 25 edition of the Tribune. Cords also said it was not yet known how the re-seating process would affect student seating.

Cords, along with Senior Vice President Greg Kliebhan and the Rev. Andy Thon, vice president of student affairs, were the administrators present at what Agnew called a "very successful information-sharing" that gave MUSG a "better understanding" of the re-seating process and financial situation.

MUSG plans to form a committee sometime this week to exclusively research and brainstorm solutions for re-seating the student section, Agnew said. There are spots for four students on that committee, which is scheduled to meet for the first time on Feb. 9.

Daniel LaNuez, the new MUSG financial vice president, said he would like to improve communication with student organizations about the allocation process for funding.

LaNuez, whose term begins Wednesday, plans to create a database of clubs and their treasurers so he can make the organizations aware of deadlines and guidelines to apply for funding.

Mary Kate Havlik, legislative vice president, said a big focus of this semester is taking initiative to solidify communication between administration and students. She said she is working with Associate Vice President Toby Peters.

"We want to get students to feel more confident with the administration and realize that the administration is there for students," Havlik said.
