Study ranks risk level of lots

Structure 1, Lot D and Lot R have been found to be the most potentially dangerous to park cars in, when concerning campus-owned lots.

In a study conducted by the Tribune, all incidents involving vandalism, theft from autos and theft of autos that have occurred this semester were counted and put into a point system to determine the risk level for each lot.

Within the point system used, vandalism was counted as one point, while theft from auto was counted as two points and theft of auto counted for three points.

The results determined that Lot R, located at North 10th and West Michigan streets, is the most risky. It scored four points, according to the system.

Despite the finding, sophomore Nick Brescia was not worried.

“I don’t feel too concerned about the lot, except for the low fences — someone could easily jump over them,” he said.

According to Capt. Russ Shaw, associate director of the Department of Public Safety, one reason the lot could be more high risk than some others is the overhang of Straz Tower, which shields a section of the lot from view.

Brescia will continue to park his car there.

“Overall, I’ve had no problems and will continue to park my car here,” he said.

Structure 1, located at the corner of North 16th Street and West Wisconsin Avenue, and Lot D, located at the corner of North 14th and West Wells streets, tied for second most risky, scoring three points each.

The numbers may be deceiving, due to the fact that Structure 1 holds 1,200 vehicles at maximum capacity and both Lots D and R hold significantly less. Lot R holds approximately 45 vehicles, while Lot D holds approximately 66.

All parking lots owned by Marquette are patrolled the same number of times by the same number of officers, unless a problem arises in one specific area. Then adjustments are made, according to Shaw.

“All patrol officers are required to check and ride through all Marquette lots several times per shift,” Shaw said.

In addition to DPS officers patrolling the lots, Student Safety is also responsible for patrolling the lots during their evening routes.

Other lots that scored in the point system included Lots A, C, F and M, which all finished with one point each.
