Out Of Order

I'm putting the mailbag on hold one more week. We'll get to all the important questions then. Right now I have to give out a shiny, gold "Shut the hell up" award. For those of you wondering, it's an award I created about two nights ago. Here are the candidates:

Associate Professor of Political Science John McAdams for his work with "MU Warrior" on www.mu-warrior.blogspot.com.

McAdams is a regular thorn in everyone's side. Normally I would ignore it. Then the Tribune came under fire for the umpteenth time on his Weblog. This time it's our ethics policy that has crawled up his rear.

Look professor, when we're not down here burning American flags, holding "Pro-Abortion" rallies and hatching schemes to keep anyone with a conservative view 100 yards from the building, we're producing a newspaper. See, down here we have to fact-check articles, copy edit articles and provide fair and accurate product. We can't go liberal or conservative lampooning for the fun of it. We can't sit, take comments out of context and label people as liberals or conservatives without talking to them. Did he do any fact checking before labeling our managing editor?

I'm all for criticism. It makes us better professionals. But I won't sit around and take any more abuse from a person who knows nothing about journalism. Do I come into your office and spout off about the standards of political science? No. Know why? Because I don't know the first thing about it. Keep that in mind the next time you want to talk jive about journalism. And by the way it's "Pro-Choice," not "Pro-Abortion." No one is pro-abortion. Are you, "Anti-Freedom" because you won't let a woman have the freedom to choose? Been to any "Anti-Freedom" rallies lately?

Candidate number two: Everyone who is calling for more diversity.

Two Viewpoints from Thursday sparked this one. Everyone likes diversity. I do, you do, it's just so diverse and fun and nice. For the love of God stop cramming it down my throat every five seconds. It's the equivalent of annoying kids in a car screaming "Are we diverse yet? Are we diverse yet? Are we diverse yet?"

Here's a novel idea. Let's take five seconds and be proud of the white kids we have at this school. I am sick and tired of having to feel ashamed of the fact that I am white.

Diversity is a great goal to have, but where does it end? Is there a magic number out there? When is it OK for me to be white again?

It's not the end of the world to have white people here. How about we get off the diversity kick and back on track with the whole education thing. You know, the reason I pay so much to go to school here.

And the winner is… heck, you're all winners in my book. So shut the hell up!
