Top two square off

Tonight's opponent will bring back fond memories for the men's club volleyball team.

Marquette, the current No. 1 club team in the country, last faced No. 2 Wisconsin-Oshkosh in the 2005 national championship, which the Golden Eagles won 28-26, 25-20.

Oshkosh fields an experienced team that will hope to gain some retribution at the Rec Center tonight at 7:30.

"They return six of seven starters," senior Tom Liszka said. "I'm sure they're thinking they can win. … It's going to be a highly intense match."

While Marquette has dropped just one game in seven matches (all wins), the team has merely been cruising through mediocre competition.

"We really haven't played to our ability," Liszka said. "Oshkosh will be our first real test."

The match's intensity will especially benefit the young players who have filled in for three departed starters on last year's title-winning squad: Chuck Warner, who won national MVP honors, Steve Austin and Josh Biros.

Doing a lot with a little

In it's first and final meet of the regular season, the Marquette wrestling team placed two of its five wrestlers at the 10th annual Spartan Open, hosted by the University of Dubuque (Iowa).

"It would have been nice to have been able to go to more opens," said club president Brett Coffelt, "but at this point in the college season there really aren't too many more opens available."

So the team made the most of its lone opportunity.

Coffelt, a freshman, dropped to 125 pounds and went 4-1 on the weekend. He defeated Wisconsin's Drew Hammon, a freshman on the Badger's Division I team, 9-5 to win the third-place match.

Junior Adam Crozier, wrestling in a competitive match for the first time since high school, pinned two opponents in the first period and finished in fifth place with a 3-2 record.

Rodney Michna (125 pounds), Dan Krueger (149) and Rick West (157) also represented Marquette at the Spartan Open.

Let the bidding begin

The Marquette men's rugby football club team is bringing back the tradition of auctioning off its players for a fundraiser. The event will take place March 3, from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. in the AMU CD Ballroom. Admission is $5 and bidding starts at $1. Every player will be sold to perform a chosen service such as kitchen cleaning, running errands, taking out the garbage, food pick-up and delivery, vacuuming and car washing. Each player will be given the freedom to choose his own theme, costume and music. All benefits will go toward ruby equipment.
