The Golden Eagles were coming off a 75-65 home victory over No. 10 Notre Dame on Jan. 13, but were unable to pull off an upset on the road in a tough Big East Conference.
Marquette (11-7, 2-2 Big East) got within four points early in the second half, but surrendered a 16-0 run to Rutgers, which ultimately put the game out of reach.
The Golden Eagles were led by the backcourt duo of senior Krystal Ellis and sophomore Angel Robinson. Ellis recorded 14 points and four rebounds and Robinson added 13 points.
The Scarlet Knights shot 66 percent from the field in the second half and 51 percent for the game while holding Marquette to just 41 percent shooting.
Coach Terri Mitchell said she was discouraged the team lost by as much as it did.
"I am thoroughly disappointed in that," Mitchell said. "If you are going to lose, you go down fighting."
