Pop ups proscribed by peachy programs

Bob Mate, in his Oct. 21 column, describes a problem commonly faced by a lot of people: a constant stream of irritating pop up ads. However, he misidentifies the source of this problem. They do not simply enter the computer over the computer network, and there is nothing that IT services can do to stop them. Pop ups can be caused by scripts in running Web pages, and ones of the type he describes are actually often caused by programs unwittingly installed by the user (often with programs such as KaZaA, BonzaiBuddy, or WeatherBug).
