When it comes to their stances on education, this year's gubernatorial candidates don't have much in the way of common ground.

Topping the list of hotly-debated issues has been the question of how to handle the University of Wisconsin System.

Doyle has drawn sharp criticism from his opponents for the way the UW System has been managed during his term. Since his election in 2002, tuition at UW schools has gone up more than 50 percent.

At the same time, the amount of financial aid available to students was increased to offset the increased tuition.

Doyle has also announced plans to make tuition at UW schools deductible from state taxes for in-state students.

In 2005, Doyle vetoed a budget that he said would have slashed funding for K-12 public schools.

Meanwhile, Republican challenger Mark Green has expressed a desire revamp the way the UW System is run.

One of Green's primary stated goals is to make the UW System more accessible for in-state students. His "Wisconsin First" proposal would put a cap on tuition to prevent it from rising faster than the rate of inflation and give admissions priority to in-state students.

Green also wants to make changes in Wisconsin's public schools. He says wants teachers' salaries to reflect the quality of the work they do, not the quantity, and supports a pay scale based on performance, not seniority.
