Marquette University has canceled all undergraduate and graduate school classes for Jan. 23 due to severe winter weather, according to an SMS weather alert message sent at 5:02 p.m.
Campus will remain operational, and more information can be found in students’ emails. The last time the university canceled school due to cold temperatures was Jan 21, 2025.
Temperatures are expected to reach minus 30 degrees or lower, and the National Weather Service is advising people stay inside if possible. An extreme cold warning has been issued for southeastern Wisconsin from midnight to 1 p.m. Jan. 23.
Meteorologists warn just 15 minutes in the cold could result in frostbite; the same amount of time it takes most students to get from their dorm or residence to class.
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee sent an email to students the morning of Jan. 22 canceling school events and activities for Jan. 23 due to extreme cold. Throughout the week, Milwaukee Public Schools, Milwaukee Area Technical College and Milwaukee area districts have called off school, as well.
