Chris Brown is one of the most talked about artists in the media. He has definitely made a name for himself from his domestic violence charges in 2008 to him claiming his unknown daughter Royalty in 2015.

Brown’s career began when he signed with Jive Records in 2004. Brown released his self-titled debut album the following year which peaked at number two on the US Billboard 200 and was later certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Brown became the first male artist as a lead since Diddy in 1997 to have his debut single top the chart when his first single “Run It!” peaked atop the US Billboard Hot 100. His second album Exclusive (2007) spawned his second Hot 100 number one “Kiss Kiss“, in addition to “With You” and “Forever“. The album was also certified double platinum by the RIAA. Brown’s other albums include Graffiti (2009), F.A.M.E. (2011), Fortune (2012), X (2014), Fan of a Fan: The Album (a collaboration album with Tyga, 2010), and his latest release Royalty (2015).

Released by RCA Records on Dec. 18, Royalty is the seventh studio album for Brown. It features dance-pop and funk sounds with his famous R&B vibes. The album features collaborations with Solo Lucci, Tayla Parx and Future.

The album seemed a bit chaotic to me. Songs like “Liquor” and “Back to Sleep” featured his crooning vocals, which reminded me a lot of his older music. His other songs like “Anyway” and “Zero” sent me in the wrong direction. The electro beats are definitely popular on the radio right now, and Brown seems to be desperately calling for that attention.

One of my favorites on the album is “Little More (Royalty)”. I love his vocals on the track and the music video for the song. “Oh baby girl you inspire me…my baby girl, my Royalty, girl you’re the lyrics to my song” is the lyric that listeners know for sure the song is about his daughter. It gets a little confusing at some points.

My other two favorites are “Back to Sleep” and “Anyway”. “Back to Sleep” reminds me of Brown’s older music, which I love. Tayla Parx and Brown’s vocals together on “Anyway” are a match made in heaven.

I will always be a Chris Brown fan and while this album was not his best, it was good enough to get his name back on Billboard. Looking at the time span of his album releases, we will probably get new music from the artist shortly and I hope he finds one way to channel his music (hopefully towards his old R&B ways).
