Captured battery suspect was reportedly aggressive panhandler

The Department of Public Safety released more details Thursday about a battery that occurred close to campus late Wednesday night.

Associate Director of DPS Capt. Russell Shaw said officers were dispatched to the 1500 block of West Wells Street at 11:09 p.m. to deal with an aggressive panhandler.

Once on scene, officers concluded that the individual, a 47-year-old male from the near south side of Milwaukee, was the same person who reportedly had struck a 22-year-old male victim not affiliated with Marquette just minutes before.

A Student Safety Programs student employee reported the panhandler because he was allegedly being verbally disruptive to pedestrians in the area, saying he was willing to fight anyone who came near him.

After the man behaved erratically near a responding officer, he fled the scene on foot toward McCormick Hall, where a student and an alumnus helped DPS detain him.

The man was taken into Milwaukee Police Department custody.
