Battery suspect was aggressive

The Department of Public Safety has released more details about a battery that occurred close to campus late last Wednesday night.

Associate Director of DPS Capt. Russell Shaw said officers were dispatched to the 1500 block of West Wells Street at 11:09 p.m. to deal with an aggressive panhandler.

Once on scene, officers concluded that the individual, a 47-year-old male from the near south side of Milwaukee, was the same person who reportedly struck a 22-year-old male victim not affiliated with Marquette just minutes before.

The victim told DPS officers the panhandler struck him while he was walking along Wells Street near the Milwaukee Rescue Mission. DPS officers caught up with the suspect three blocks east.

A Student Safety Program’s student employee reported the panhandler because he was being verbally disruptive to pedestrians in the area and was reportedly telling people he was willing to fight anyone who came near him.

After the man behaved erratically near a responding officer, he fled the scene on foot toward McCormick Hall, where a student and an alumnus helped DPS detain him.

The man was taken into Milwaukee Police Department custody.
