At its last senate meeting of the academic year, Marquette Student Government approved a new Outreach Vice President position, elected a President Pro Tempore and budget committee.
OVP is a new executive board position. The OVP will chair an executive council including the coordinator for diversity, inclusion and social justice and the coordinator for community engagement.
Hannah Thiry, a sophomore in the College of Business Administration, was selected by a committee led by MUSG president Abe Ortiz Tapia. The senate approved the nomination unanimously by a voice vote.
Senator Roberto Santos, a junior in the College of Arts & Sciences, spoke in the negative, claiming he did not see her motivation and said she did not show up for committee meetings.
Senator Blake Hartman, a freshman in the College of Business Administration, who was a part of the selection committee, among others senators spoke in the affirmative for Thiry.
“Our committee put in a lot of time, and Hannah excelled compared to other candidates,” Hartman said.
“Her experience will be a great asset,” said Senator Riley Wogernese, a junior in the College of Business Administration. “The committee did a great job in picking her.”
The senate voted to approve Thiry as OVP.
Hartman nominated Senator Courtney Guc, a junior in the College of Business Administration, for president pro tempore, who assists the legislative vice president. Guc said she would like to run because she wants to increase senator retention rate and collaboration among committees on senate.
“She has great ideas and is good at bringing people together,” Wogernese said. “She is a great asset to the senate as a whole and will help us accomplish a lot.”
Guc was unanimously elected by a voice vote.
Senator Meredith Gillespie, a freshman in the College of Arts & Sciences, ran to be on budget committee and was also unanimously elected by a voice vote.
