In response to the Dec. 1 editorial, “Safety concerns at 16th, 17th and Kilbourn,” Marquette Student Government would like to update the Marquette community with the actions that have been taken toward these student concerns. We appreciate the attention the Marquette Tribune has shed on this issue and find it helpful in identifying the specifics of this safety concern.
MUSG is currently addressing the safety at Kilbourn Avenue and 16th and 17th streets with university and city officials. In November, a traffic-calming and street study walk was conducted on campus with Milwaukee 4th District Alderman Robert Bauman, his city planner from the Department of Public Works, university architect Tom Ganey and Vice President of Public Affairs Rana Altenburg along with representatives from the Department of Public Safety and MUSG.
This street study highlighted problem spots for traffic on campus and major areas of concern for student safety, particularly the 16th and 17th street intersections on Kilbourn. MUSG commends Alderman Bauman, the Department of Public Affairs and DPS for their continued work on this issue.
Student safety is of high importance and MUSG plans to meet with city officials and the Department of Public Works to continue to work with the city at addressing student concerns when classes resume in January.
Carly Nusser, an off-campus senator in MUSG, is a junior in the College of Communication.
