With classes being mostly online last school year, it was weird not seeing some of the usual faces while walking around school. So seeing old and new faces at the Black Student Cookout was refreshing.
Friday, Sept. 10, the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and the Black Student Council teamed up to provide a cookout for Black students on campus. The event featured a DJ along with different games, and of course, some good food. The event was catered by Daddy’s Soul Food and Grille and included chicken, fish, spaghetti and mac and cheese.
For Andrea Nkansah, a junior in the College of Business Administration, the most impressive thing of the event was the turnout.
“That was the most amount of Black people I have seen on campus in my three years here,” says Nkansah. “So I really liked that we were all together and we were here to enjoy ourselves at the beginning of the school year.”
Last year was a big year for the Black Student Council, as they had a sit-in at Zilber Hall while fighting for better inclusion for Black students at Marquette. Nkansah hopes this cookout is the beginning of something good for the Black community at Marquette.
“I really hope to see us coming together and being positive for the betterment of this campus. We need to improve the Black community this year.”
Adrian Perk, a member of the Delta Kappa Nupes Fraternity, came to the event with other Fraternity brothers, and saw this cookout was bigger than what it was.
“Seeing that many young Black students together after COVID showed how much we need to come together, to get away from the harsh reality of things if it’s just for a moment.”
Over 100 people checked into the cookout, with around 14 different BSC and Fraternity and Sorority members helping out at the event.
