The Marquette women’s tennis team had a very successful weekend in doubles, while the singles struggled at the Wolverine Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Marquette’s doubles players went 7-2 over the three-day tournament. The doubles tandem of juniors Christina Ruiz and Rachael Hush went 3-1.
Coach Jody Bronson said this year’s doubles tandems are “in a really good place at this point in the season.” But the good start doesn’t exclude them from criticism.
“We need to continue to be aggressive at the net and not wait for the ball to come to us,” Bronson said. “And recognize the opportunities where we can afford to take some chances.”
While doubles had a very successful weekend, the players had some problems with singles.
Marquette singles players went 12-15 in the tournament. Despite the poor team record, some individuals had successful weekends.
Senior Elly Strother finished fourth in her flight, while freshmen Kelly Barry and Ruiz were victorious in their consolation flights.
Marquette has time to fix some of the kinks in its singles matches as the next tournament doesn’t begin until Oct. 22 at the ITA Region II Championships in Evanston, Ill. and Champaign, Ill.
