Two men are being charged in connection with an armed robbery that occurred on campus in early August.
Tommy Z. Yang, 18, of Milwaukee, is being charged with attempted armed robbery, according to a criminal complaint. Marquay D. Holloway, 19, also of Milwaukee, is facing three felony charges: second degree reckless injury, attempted armed robbery and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Yang and Holloway attacked and shot a man near the corner of 15th Street and Kilbourn Avenue at 12:11 a.m. on Aug. 11.
Department of Public Safety officers received a call from a Student Safety Programs LIMO driver, who reported seeing the victim on the ground, said Russell Shaw, associate director of DPS.
DPS officers found the collapsed male suffering from a gunshot wound. A passing Marquette student who was trained as an emergency medical technician administered medical assistance to the victim, Shaw said.
Soon after officers arrived on the scene, DPS received a call from a student who witnessed the two suspects in the 800 block of North 15th Street. After receiving the call, officers surrounded the area and were able to quickly detain the suspects. DPS witnessed Holloway attempting to gain access to a residence in the area.
In addition to acting on a critical student tip, DPS officers used technology to track down the suspects.
“With the help of our video camera, we were able to identify and place both suspects at the scene of the incident,” Shaw said.
DPS later handed over the suspects to the Milwaukee Police Department for arrest.
This isn’t Holloway’s first run-in with the law. In 2007 he pled guilty to a series of charges dealing with the possession a short-barreled shotgun/rifle, possession of a dangerous weapon while under 18 years of age, and possession of the drug THC, the active ingredient in marijuana.
After pleading guilty, Holloway served time in a correctional facility and was on placed on probation after his release.
Yang could face up to 20 years in prison. Holloway, however, could face up to 59 and a half years since he is being charged as a repeat offender.
The suspects will face a judge Sept. 23.
