Marquette men’s golf went almost one full year, since last April’s Big East championship, without winning a tournament.
Until Tuesday.
The Golden Eagles finished the Bell Bank “Pay It Forward” Collegiate held at Wigwam Resort in Arizona in first place, posting a 21-under par. Marquette has now won at least one team title every season dating back to 2020-21.
The Golden Eagles went into the final round trailing leaders Nebraska by one stroke, but it was Iowa State — which finished four strokes behind MU — that gave the victors the most trouble. The Cyclones held a three-stroke lead before Marquette surged ahead on the back nine.
Junior Mason Schmidtke and senior Johan Widal went 2-under during the last seven holes, and sophomore Vincent Cervantes ended his tournament with four consecutive birdies to finish 2-under on the day. Their work helped the Golden Eagles post the lowest score in a round for any team during the tournament at 9-under 279.
Individually, Schmidtke posted a career low for the second-straight tournament.
After finishing at 6-under par just over a week ago in Georgia, he beat that with an 8-under 208 in Arizona. The junior’s 68 in the final round pushed himself up to second on the leaderboard, two shots behind Maryland’s Emil Riegger.
Widal also finished in the top 10 at 10th, carding a 4-under 212.
Marquette heads to Lexington, Kentucky on April 13, for the Bluegrass Collegiate Invitational, the Golden Eagles’ final tournament before the Big East Championships from May 2-4.
