Marquette’s Gender and Sexuality Resource Center is being split into two different departments, Provost Daniel Myers announced today in an email.

The departments are a LGBT resource center, to be named in the coming weeks, and a Center for Gender and Sexualities Studies for research and teaching. Myer’s email, which was sent to the Marquette community, said the changes are effective immediately.

These changes are coming three months after the university discovered and subsequently removed a mural of FBI fugitive Assata Shakur in the GSRC on the fourth floor of the Alumni Memorial Union. Susannah Bartlow, the GSRC’s former director, left the university after the incident.

The LGBT resource center will operate under the Division of Student Affairs and be linked to the Center for Intercultural Engagement on the first floor of the AMU. CIE director Eva Martinez Powless will direct this new center, which will have a staff of full-time and student employees.

The resource center will be in the space adjacent to the CIE. Myers said in the email that the resource center and CIE are linked but will maintain their different focuses.

The Center for Gender and Sexualities Studies will reside in the College of Arts & Sciences in Sensenbrenner Hall and be directed by Angelique Harris, social and cultural sciences professor. It will house the Women’s and Gender Studies major and minor and support research and teaching on gender and sexuality.

“One of my first priorities as provost was to examine the structure and support for the GSRC to help the university move ahead in a positive way that supports the continuing development of the center and its work,” Myers said in the email.
