From a dark, moody bar with low hanging mosaic lights and painted portraits of family members to a brightly lit open space decorated with liquor bottle shaped inflatables and screens playing a live “futbol” game, Conejito’s Place is everything that a Mexican restaurant should be and more. I could go on about the history of the place and how it’s located just past the 6th Street bridge over in Walker’s Point, but that’s what Google is for, I’m here to talk about the food. The authentic Mexican food served in doubled paper plates tastes what you would imagine home-cooked Mexican food to taste like. This simplicity and no-nonsense business is echoed in the small but appealing menu of classics like tacos, tostadas and enchiladas.
The limited options is truly a testament to the quality of the food at Conejito’s. They make what they’re good at and to be sure, I’ve tried them all. That’s including the pork spare ribs – for around $5, it is the best piece of slow cooked, fall off the bone pork spare ribs you will probably ever have in a Mexican Restaurant.
There’s no gimmick around the appeal of Conejito’s. No need to make reservations days ahead of time, and no need to put your name on an endless list for a table. No need for a Taco Tuesday or Margarita Monday because that’s every single day of the week at Conejito’s. With almost every menu item under $5 (that’s including rice and beans) there will be no regrets in what you order. I have seen customers order ¼ pints of the chips and salsa to take home. The homemade salsa is made fresh everyday and always served with warm tortilla chips. The chips and salsa (or maybe their guacamole if you’re feeling fancy) is the only way to start your meal at Conejito’s place. Munch on chips while you sip on margaritas, and ask yourself ‘Why didn’t I go here sooner?’
