Forgoing the oh-so-formulaic “dinner and a movie” date, I spent my Valentine’s Day in Chicago, where I had the pleasure of seeing Mayer Hawthorne and Quadron at Park West. Quadron, the opening act, is a Danish neo-soul band featuring lead singer Coco O and producer Robin Hannibal. Coco O’s sultry, powerful voice filled the venue and set the stage for what was to be a very fun night of music. Quadron played for about forty-five minutes, covering a good deal of their catalog. The highlights of their set were the songs “Hey Love” and “Favorite Star.” After seeing Quadron perform live, I instantly became a fan and have since listened to their entire discography. They are just as good on their album as they are live!
Then, it was time for the main attraction – Mayer Hawthorne. Funny, handsome, and incredibly talented, Mayer Hawthorne’s smooth falsetto and great showmanship were put to good use. His backing band, known as the County, were all excellent musicians who clearly love what they are doing. Mayer Hawthorne performed songs from each of his three albums: the trippy “Green-Eyed Love” and 60’s-soul throwback tune “I Wish It Would Rain,” from his A Strange Arrangement album; the sunny “The Walk” and the ultra-catchy “No Strings” from How Do You Do; and finally the sexy “Back Seat Lover” and the fist-pumping party anthem “Crime” from the Pharrell-produced Where Does This Door Go album. At first, Hawthorne seemed almost too-cool-for-school in his formal suit jacket and perfectly coiffed hair, but his dorky Midwestern roots came out during Hawthorne’s signature “Picture Time” break, in which Hawthorne and his band take a picture from the back of the stage with the audience. They then post the picture to Hawthorne’s website, and everyone in attendance can tag themselves in it. It’s a unique idea that I had not personally seen any other artist do, and it added a layer of intimacy to the show that was perfect for Valentine’s Day. One of the coolest things about Mayer Hawthorne’s concerts is the diverse range of people that come out to see him. People of all ages, colors, and musical tastes can be seen in attendance- he really brings the people together. This was definitely one of the top ten concerts I have ever attended, and if you ever have a chance to see Mayer Hawthorne, I highly recommend you do.
