On Thursday, Marquette coach Buzz Williams landed the first player of his 2012 recruiting class in guard Jamal Ferguson, ranked as the No. 69 player of the class according to Rivals.com.
Ferguson, a native of Norfolk, Va., is 6-foot-3-inches, 170 pounds and a four-star recruit out of Maury High School, according to Rivals. The website rated him as the No. 14 shooting guard in his class.
Ferguson is a very long and athletic defender. Many believe that he can develop into a lock-down defender someday. But he’s also a great slasher who has a scorer’s mentality.
A concern for Ferguson is making his jump shot more consistent, especially from beyond the three-point line. Ferguson has good range from 19 feet out. It’s something he’ll have to work on in his senior year of high school and entering his freshman year at Marquette.
This year at Maury, the junior is averaging 16.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game entering play last Friday.
Ferguson chose Marquette over Georgetown, Virginia Tech, Old Dominion and Texas A&M.
