Stone Creek Coffee is brewing up something special for Marquette — its own coffee blend — and it wants student and faculty input on possible selections.
The Brew Bayou, in collaboration with Stone Creek Coffee Roasters, held a coffee sampling event Wednesday in the Alumni Memorial Union to bring attention to the coffee selection process. Attendees were asked to sample two different coffees and vote for their favorite.
The Brew, run by Marquette’s food service provider Sodexo, also asked samplers to submit name ideas for the upcoming coffee. The student with the winning idea will receive a one-pound bag of the new Marquette coffee.
Molly Gilmore, a sophomore in the College of Arts & Sciences, was one of hundreds of students who made their way to the AMU for the sampling event.
“It is going to be Marquette’s coffee, so it is important that the students like it and have a say in what is chosen,” Gilmore said.
While Stone Creek will design the label for the signature coffee roast, Brew employees said they had no idea what the blend would be called.
“It will be after we see the label that we may vote on a name,” said Kathy Swoboda, Brew Cafes retail manager. “This may be a longer process.”
For Marquette, an original coffee blend with the university as its namesake is bound to get campus excited.
According to Christine Scheil, retail director for the AMU, the project team narrowed down the original Stone Creek coffee selections from five varieties to two. Those involved in the initial tests wanted to choose two blends they thought best represented Marquette as a community, Scheil said.
“We have a lot more sampling to offer,” Scheil said. “We have recently received a lot of interest.”
The Brew will continue to make samples available by appointment to Marquette student organizations and administrative offices. The date the coffee will be released for purchase has not been determined, and Brew supervisor Taylor Pamperin said the creation process is still underway.
“We are taking our time. We want to get everyone involved,” Pamperin said. “We want the entire Marquette community to be part of the process.”
Pamperin said the Brew is determined to create a coffee using the values of Marquette’s students, faculty and staff members.
“Having a coffee that is fair trade and organic means something to Marquette,” Pamperin said.

Great idea! Just out of curiosity, will the blend be available for purchase through the STone Creek and/or MU websites? I’m sure alums throughout the country will buy the product. Also, has any thought been given to giving a portion of the proceeds to something like MU’s community outreach programs, food pantries, etc.?
Thanks.
