Almost no one likes to miss a Marquette basketball game, but sometimes it’s unavoidable. Now, there’s an app for that.
Marquette Athletics, in conjunction with CBS College Sports, released Marquette Mobile on Feb. 8. Marquette Mobile is an application for iPhone or iPod Touch that provides subscribers with information from GoMarquette.com, according to Scott Kuykendall, associate athletic director of media relations for Marquette Athletics.
The application offers access to breaking news, scores, schedules and some audio and video material for all Marquette Big East sports teams.
“These multiple platforms allow us, as an athletic department, to help share the stories of our student athletes to a variety of audiences through a wide range of mediums,” said Luke LeNoble, director of media relations for Marquette Athletics, in an e-mail.
Marquette Mobile was developed through CBS College Sports, the Web provider for GoMarquette.com. Similar applications have been successful at other universities, and Marquette also wanted to take advantage of the opportunity, Kuykendall said.
The application is currently available for a $4.99 annual fee on iTunes, but it is still being developed and improved, Kuykendall said. He said the audio and video components are fairly limited right now, only offering select clips. Eventually, Kuykendall said subscribers might have access to live play-by-play updates and more audio and video components.
“It’s just another way that fans can keep up to date with the latest info,” Kuykendall said. “We’re trying to branch out as far as we can and get into some different areas.”
Brian Ullmann, senior associate athletic director for the University of Maryland, said UMD considered several options for an application before deciding to partner with CBS College Sports.
“People had been asking us for an iPhone app, and people had been asking for a better mobile version of our Web site,” Ullmann said.
LeNoble said Marquette chose to develop Marquette Mobile for similar reasons.
Several other universities also offer a similar application through CBS College Sports, including University of Missouri, University of Kansas and University of Alabama.
“As we move along with the technology revolution, we find that we need to suit the growing demands of our supporters and fans,” LeNoble said in an e-mail.
Maryland, like Marquette, is also working to provide more interactive content through its application, TerpsMobile, which was released last month. Ullmann said it is important to continually develop such applications and to constantly be able to offer new content through them.
“Everything’s got an app, right?” Kuykendall said.

Do they seriously expect us to pay $5 for that piece of junk? Like most students, I don’t really read The Trib, I just glance at the cover story when I pass one of the paper distribution things. I got excited because the cover made it seem like Marquette made a good application for students. Nope, CBS just made a simple Marquette news aggregate application. You’d think a $30,000/year subscription would do the trick, but no, they want more. Thanks MU! You’re the best!
