This recipe was one of Paula Awe’s mother’s specialties. Awe said her mother, Dorothy Meilick, rarely shared the secrets of her apple torte.
What you need:
2 cups flour
1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 cup margarine
1 cup water
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup oatmeal
1 cup sugar
2 Tbs. cornstarch
8 – 10 large apples, peeled and sliced
Method:
1. Mix flour, brown sugar, salt and oatmeal together. Cut in margarine.
2. Place two-thirds of the oatmeal mixture in a 13 x 9 inch pan.
3. Place apples in rows, side by side, on top of the oatmeal.
4. Put sugar, water, cornstarch and vanilla in a pan. Heat until boiling; turn down heat and simmer until thick, about 3 to 5 minutes. Pour over apples.
5. Top apples with remaining oatmeal mixture. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 to 60 minutes.
